Wastewater treatment plant

A wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) or wastewater treatment works is an industrial structure designed to remove biological or chemical waste products from water, thereby permitting the treated water to be used for other purposes.

Pulp and paper industry has been a pioneer when developing activated sludge processes to minimize several kinds of harmful effects of waste waters. Suspended solids as well as chemical and biological oxygen demands have dropped radically since 80's when large waste water treatment units were built on the shores of lake Saimaa and river Kymijoki.
